Legislation
We have taken an official position supporting this bill.
Tax Credits for Public & Private School Students
Marylanders can get up to $1,700 off of their federal taxes by donating to help students in need at both public and private schools, but the legislature must opt in to this program. This is free money to help kids in need. The legislation:
Does not affect Maryland’s school funding our Blueprint mandates
Applies to tutoring, books, tuition, testing fees, technology, and other approved education expenses
Ensures accountability by requiring annual reporting, distributing funds to multiple schools and students, and verifying income levels.
If Maryland does not opt in, citizens can still get the tax credit by donating to out-of-state students, but cannot get tax credit for helping Maryland students. This legislation will encourage Maryland donors to help Maryland’s kids.

Schools Supporting This Effort
Improving Maryland’s Laws
Since the Blueprint for Education was adopted, Maryland’s schools operate in one of the most complicated legal environments in America. Even before this legislation, our charter school law has been consistently ranked as one of the worst in the country. We support laws that simplify the legal environment for teachers and administrators, while ensuring accountability to parents and taxpayers.
